What Are Light Filtering Curtains?

Light-filtering curtains are an ideal window treatments designed to allow some natural light to pass through while still providing room privacy and reducing glare. These sheer curtains are typically made from semi-transparent or translucent materials that soften the incoming sun light, making them ideal for areas where you want to maintain some level of brightness while also maintaining and drape home privacy, such as living rooms, dining rooms, and offices.

These light-filtering curtains are often made from lightweight fabrics like sheer or semi-sheer materials, such as cotton, chiffon, voile, or linen. They come in various colors, style, and designs to complement different interior styles and preferences. Light-filtering curtains are an ideal choice and option for homeowners who want to strike a balance between natural light and home privacy without completely blocking out room sunlight.

Can People See in With Light Filtering Curtains?

Light filtering curtains provide varying degrees of room privacy depending on factors such as the opacity of the fabric, lighting conditions inside and outside the room, and the distance between the curtains and the window. While they do allow some sunlight to pass through, they typically obscure direct views into the home or room, especially during the daytime when the room outside is brighter than the interior.

However, it's important to note that light filtering curtain designs are not created for complete home privacy. In certain lighting conditions, especially at night when the interior is illuminated while the room outside is dark, people may be able to see silhouettes or vague shapes through the curtains' design. Therefore, if family privacy is a paramount and primary  concern, additional window treatments panel like blinds, shades, or thicker curtains may be a necessary option to choose, especially for rooms where an ideal level of family privacy is desired, such as bedrooms or bathrooms.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do Your Light-Filtering Curtains Provide Privacy?

If privacy is your concern, our light filtering curtains work, with a catch. During the day, because it’s bright outside, these curtains provide plenty of privacy. But at night, with a lit bedroom, people may see your silhouettes. Our cotton linings filter light while adding more privacy. Meanwhile, blackout curtains provide 100% privacy. They obscure any silhouettes, and there are soundproof options available to give your home even more privacy.

How Much Light Do They Actually Block?

It depends on which curtain you purchase. Sheer linen curtains block 10% of light. Medium-weight blocks up to 30% of light, and cotton lining blocks up to 40%. If you want to enjoy 100% light blocking, purchase our curtains with a blackout liner. A blackout liner works well for bedrooms, nurseries, or home theaters.

What Is the Difference Between Your Light-Filtering and Sheer Curtains?

Our sheer curtains are light and are designed to let in the most light possible. Meanwhile, light-filtering curtains are heavier, letting only a soft glow in. Sheer curtains also provide less privacy, while light-filtering curtains allow for more. Another difference is that sheer curtains come in only three colors (white, off-white, and natural beige.) Meanwhile, medium-weight linen light filtering curtains come in 27. Therefore, the latter is a better choice if there’s a specific color man.

Do Your Light-Filtering Curtains Darken a Room or Just Soften the Light?

Our light filtering curtains will soften the light, while heavier curtains reducing more light. If you’re a third-shift worker, or you are a night owl, we would recommend our blackout lining for a bedroom. Meanwhile, light-filtering curtains work well for living rooms, kitchens, or any other area where soft light can enhance the room and make it feel larger.

Will They Reduce Glare on TVs and Computer Screens?

Yes! Light filtering curtains diffuse harsh sunlight, making it easier to watch your favorite shows without the sun peeking in.

What Curtain Header Style Should I Pick (Grommet, Rod Pocket, Pinch Pleat, or Back Tab)?

It depends on what you want. Pinch pleat is great if you want a room to look more formal, while grommet can give a modern, casual look. The back tab works for a minimalist look, and the rod pocket works if you want your room to be cozy.

Our curtains are 100% linen that is sourced from European flax. We never cut corners, instead preferring to be authentic with our products.

For complete privacy, we would recommend you look at our blackout curtains. We sell blackout curtains that also include soundproofing for even more privacy.

In Which Rooms Can Light-Filtering Curtains Be Used?

These curtains can be used in any room. Kitchens and living rooms tend to be people’s favorite places, as these curtains work well to reduce harsh light while letting in a warm glow. For the bedroom, blackout-lined curtains may be preferred.

Linen is naturally moisture-wicking and mold resistant. However, we would recommend you have access to some kind of ventilation, or clean your curtains regularly. This will ensure you avoid any mold. Many of our customers buy our curtains for their bathrooms, which has the most moisture out of any room, and are satisfied with their purchase.

How Do You Clean Linen Light-Filtering Curtains?

Dry cleaning works the best with our curtains. Avoid machine washing or using harsh chemicals.

How Long Should Light-Filtering Curtains Be?

Generally, light-filtering curtains should go a few inches above the window frame to around a half inch from the floor. This length will ensure that the windows are covered without spilling over the floor. It can depend on the hanging style as well. The float style is ½ inch from the floor, preventing dragging and dust but giving the curtains a clean appearance. The kiss style is when the curtains touch the floor, adding extra style and preventing light from leaking out. Puddle style is when the curtains extend further, creating a puddle effect on the floor to give the room a more luxurious feel. However, this style will require frequent dustings.

How Should Light-Filtering Curtains Be Hung?

We would recommend you hang the curtains 4”-6” inches above the window frame, and be sure they extend around 6”-12” inches wide on each side. A curtain rod will work well for most people. Tracks can also work, especially if your window is curved or if you want a low-maintenance way to open and close your drapes.
