Frequently Asked Questions

How Do I Measure Curtains Properly?

It depends on whether you want the mount inside or outside the window frame. Outside mounts will add a more vintage, high-end look to your home, while inside mounts can add more convenience. You’ll want to hang an outside mount about 4-10 inches above the frame of your window, and ensure that the curtains extend 6-12 inches beyond your window on each side. This will ensure that no light enters and that all your curtains cover the entire window.

For width, measure the width of the window, including any trimmings, and then add extra inches for the rod. Multiply that by 1.5-2 for extra fullness. If you are using two panels, divide by 2.

For length, you will want to measure from the top of your rod to wherever your drop will be. Some people will want the curtains to hang half an inch above the floor, while others may want the curtains to “Puddle” on the ground 6 inches.

Use measuring tape, then double-check before ordering curtains. If you have a unique measurement or window type, we also offer custom-made curtains.

How Much Wider Should My Curtains Be Than My Window?

Your curtains should be about 1.5 to 2.5 times the amount of the window’s width. This width will ensure the curtains fill the window whenever they are closed. However, this ultimately depends on your desired look.

How Long Should My Curtains Be?

It depends on window length and what design elements you want in your home. First, measure your window, which will help you determine how long they should be. There are three types of length styles: float, break, or puddle.

Floating curtains are about a half inch above the floor. This style is great if you want to keep your curtains as clean as possible. Break curtains will be about 1-2 inches on the ground, which can add a bit of weight to your window. Meanwhile, puddle curtains will be 3-6 inches on the ground, giving them a regal feel.

How Do I Choose a Curtain Heading Style? What Is the Difference Between Eyelet (Grommet), Back Tab, Pencil Pleat, and Other Headings?

Your choice can be dependent on what type of aesthetic you want. Some people want a more modern look; others want traditional. Some people want something in between. It also depends on your desired hardware and how often you expect to open these curtains. For example, tracks are great if you see yourself opening and closing the curtains frequently.

The main headings are:

  • Pencil pleat, which gives your curtains uniformity through pencil-shaped folds.
  • Pinch pleat, which gives any home a sophisticated look.
  • Multiway, if you want to hang via a rod pocket, back tab, ring top, or track.
  • S-fold. Great if you want a designer look.
  • Back tab. This style has a hidden loop, giving your home the illusion that it’s floating.
  • Rod pocket, if you want a traditional look.
  • Grommet, if you like using rings.

What Types of Curtain Headings Do You Offer?

We offer several types of headings, including pencil and pinch pleat, multiway, s-fold, back tab, rod pocket, and grommet. Which you choose can depend on what accessories you desire and your goal.

Can I Use These Curtains in a Rental Without Permanent Installation?

Yes! There are several ways to hang curtains that do not require drilling. Tension rods can fit in any window frame, no screws required. Heavy-duty adhesive hooks can work as well, though they can come undone, especially if the room gets hot. Magnetic curtain rods are another option.

What Color Should My Curtains Be?

Your color should match your room’s vibe. Some people will choose colors that complement the color of the room. Others may contrast. For example, if your room is dark, a light color can brighten it up. Light colors can make a small room feel bigger, while dark colors can make a large room feel less intimidating. Our shop has a variety of colors that can suit any room style.

Do I Need Sheer Curtains, Unlined, Lined, Blackout (Room Darkening) or Thermal/Soundproof Curtains?

It depends on your needs. If you desire plenty of natural light and don’t care about privacy, sheer curtains can add an airy feel to any room. Semi-sheer mediumweight curtains add more density to your home and filter some light. Heavyweight curtains will give a weighty, rustic look to your house.

For lining, cotton lining can be great if you want curtains that won’t be see-through, but don’t block out the sun. Blackout lining can help to block the sun, which can regulate the room’s lighting and work well for day sleepers. Depending on the blackout level, different colors will be available. For instance, 50% will be for white, off-white, cream, and dusty pink, and 80% for other curtains. Meanwhile, 100% blackout will filter all sunlight. Finally, thermal and soundproof-lined curtains will keep your room cooler during the summer, and vice versa. These curtains will also dampen any outside noise.

Which Fabric Is Best for My Space: Linen or Velvet?

It depends on what your space goals are. If you want your area to look breathable and modern, linen fabric works excellently. Meanwhile, velvet curtains can make any home feel like a castle.

Is the Linen Fabric Thick Enough to Prevent Silhouettes at Night?

It depends on how thick the curtain is. Sheer curtains won’t add much privacy. Mediumweight curtains may create silhouettes or other patterns. Heavyweight blackout curtains, meanwhile, will keep prying eyes out of your home. Great for casual spaces or your bedroom, where you may want a little more privacy.

Do Your Curtains Come With Hooks or Other Accessories?

It depends on the heading or style. If the curtain does require hooks, there is an option to buy some. However, you can buy your own hooks or accessories if what we have doesn’t suit your needs.

Can I Wash Your Window Curtains at Home?

Our curtains are dry-clean only. This means that you should not use your washing machine to clean them. Please follow all care instructions that are included, as they can differ depending on the curtain.

Will Your Curtains Help Keep My Room Warm or Reduce Noise?

Our thermal blackout curtains with soundproofing are your best bet. These window treatments can keep the heat in during winter, and the sun out during summer. Soundproof curtains will also reduce outside noise, especially high-pitched frequencies.

Do I Need a Curtain Rod or a Track for These Curtains?

It depends on the headings. Grommet, back tab or rod pocket curtains require rods, while pleated and folded types work best with tracks. Of course, there are other ways to hang curtains as well, but these two accessories are your best bet.

What Color Is Your Blackout Curtains’ Lining?

It depends on what type of light-filtering curtains you have chosen. White lining is included with 50% and 100% blackout. For 80% filtering, it will be a light brown. Finally, thermal and soundproof lining is silver-grey.

Do You Offer Custom Sizing for Nonstandard Window Treatments?

Yes! Contact us, and we will be happy to make curtains that fit your living area needs. Our custom sizing prides itself on being affordable and having a fast turnaround for those time-sensitive home projects.

Can I Get Fabric Samples Before Buying Your Curtains?

Are Your Curtains Sold as a Single Panel or as a Set of Two?

Our curtains are usually sold as a single panel. However, if you need more, simply increase the quantity number.

How Do I Hang or Install Curtains for the Perfect Fit?

It ultimately depends on what type of mount you have. Curtain rods should be mounted around 4-6 inches above your window frame, and be extended 6-12 inches wider on both sides. If you need to install brackets, be sure to use a stud finder, or else they will not hold. These finders can be found in any hardware store. Thread the rod around the curtain, then screw the rod into the brackets. Depending on what hardware you have, you should follow any relevant instructions that may be included.

Do Back Tab Curtains Require Rings?

No; they are designed so that the curtain rod slides through them, giving you home decor that is easy to control. However, you can use rings on them if you so desire.

Is Your Fabric OEKO-TEX Certified?

Yes, all of our fabrics are certified, meaning our curtains are free from any chemicals that may be harmful. And we wouldn’t have it any other way.

Where Are Your Curtains Manufactured?

Our curtains are made by hand in Europe with 100% flax sourced from farmers’ cooperatives in Northern France and Belgium. These curtains are handmade in our own studio, with no part of the process being outsourced. We source our linen through sustainable means. We ensure perfection with every step of the sales process, giving you soft, bold, and ethical curtains that will add inspiration to any home.

What Is the Difference Between Medium-Weight and Heavyweight Linen Curtains/Drapes?

The difference is in their weight. Curtains use a weight measurement of gsm, or grams per square meter. Medium-weight curtains are 150 gsm, and heavyweight is 280. If you want a balance between sheer lightweight curtains and heavy drapes, get yourself mediumweight curtains. Drapes that are heavyweight, meanwhile, add a more regal feel to your living room or bedroom.

Are Your Curtains Heavy Enough to Hang Nicely?

Our curtains will hang solid, but it depends on what type you purchase. At 280 gsm, our heavyweight lineup will ensure your curtains look as elegant as possible.

How Many Curtain Panels Do I Need for One Window?

It depends on the width of the window and the curtain panel itself. In most cases, two panels are recommended.

Which Curtains Are Best for Insulation or Energy Savings?

Our thermal blackout curtains work best if you’re trying to fight the rising cost of electric bills! These curtains will keep the hot sun out during the summer and prevent heat from escaping during winter, reducing the burden of your HVAC. And for mild seasons, you can open them and let the home heat or cool itself naturally.

Are Your Curtains Suitable for a Child's Room or Nursery?

Yes! This especially applies to our blackout and thermal/soundproof line, which can keep a baby’s room cool, dark, and quiet. That being said, avoid floor length curtains or other lengths that may pose a risk to your child.

Do Your Curtains Work With Odd-Sized or Custom Windows?

Yes, though you may need to custom-order curtains that fit your needs. Measure these curtains, then contact us with the measurements. We’ll work hard to give you panels that fit your windows with complete functionality.

Will Your Curtains Work if My Window Is Close to the Ceiling?

Yes! Provided that the length is long enough, you can hang your curtains from the ceiling from any height, creating elegance for any room. That being said, most ceiling curtains work better with a track, meaning that a hook heading will be the perfect fit for the job.

Can Your Curtains Help Reduce Street Noise?

If you want to block traffic, our soundproof curtain line will help with that. However, they aren’t perfect. The distance from your window to the road, frequency of traffic, and the other soundproofing in your room can all play a part.

Is the Reverse Side the Same Color as the Front?

It depends on what type of curtains you have purchased. Products like blackout, soundproof, or room darkening curtains contain a liner in the back that may be a different color than what’s on the front. However, our sheer linen curtains are different on each side, though if the curtains are unlined, then the same color is on both sides.

Will Linen Curtains Wrinkle Badly After Hanging?

Our curtains will wrinkle over time after hanging. However, this wrinkling is due to a positive reason: pure linen lacks elasticity. As such, many home decorators have accepted that completely wrinkle-free curtains aren’t to be desired, and a few wrinkles can be a sign of luxury. That being said, steam treatments or wrinkle-releasing sprays can give you smoother window curtains.
